What ev chargers work involves
A home EV charge point is a dedicated circuit from your consumer unit to a wall-mounted charger, with the protection and earthing arrangements the regulations require. Most installs are a half-day to a day's work.
Costs depend on cable run, consumer unit capacity and load management.

What changes the price
- Cable run length
- The distance from the consumer unit to the parking position is the main variable.
- Route difficulty
- Surface clipping is cheap; going under a driveway, through a garage or across a garden is not.
- Consumer unit capacity
- A board with no spare way, or inadequate earthing, needs work first.
- Charger specification
- Tethered or untethered, smart features and load management affect the unit price.
- Supply capacity
- Where the supply is limited, load management or a supply upgrade may be needed.

- Where is the consumer unit, and where will the car park?
- Roughly how far apart are they, and what is the route?
- Is there off-street parking?
- Do you have, or plan, solar or battery storage?

Permissions and regulations
- Home charge point installation is normally permitted development; listed buildings differ.
- The work is notifiable electrical work and must be certified, and the installation is notified to the network operator.
When you need a specialist
- Where solar or a battery is present, load management should be designed across the whole system.
- Supply upgrades involve the network operator, not just the electrician.

Common questions
Do I need off-street parking?
For a fixed home charger, yes. Trailing cables across a pavement are not acceptable.
Can it charge from my solar?
Some chargers can prioritise surplus solar. It needs to be specified, and the system designed for it.
Is the estimate a quotation?
No. The cable route determines most of the cost, so an installer will confirm it before quoting.
