What battery storage work involves
Home battery storage stores electricity — from your own solar generation or from a cheap overnight tariff — and releases it when you would otherwise be importing at a higher rate. It is fitted alongside the consumer unit, with either a hybrid inverter or an AC-coupled unit.
Battery costs depend on usable capacity, inverter compatibility and installation complexity.

What changes the price
- Usable capacity
- Priced largely by usable kWh. The usable figure matters more than the headline capacity.
- Inverter arrangement
- Hybrid inverters replace an existing solar inverter; AC-coupled units sit alongside it. The two routes cost differently.
- Existing solar
- Retrofitting to an existing array may mean changing the inverter or adding metering.
- Location and mounting
- Garage, loft and utility installs differ in cabling, ventilation and mounting work.
- Backup supply
- Whole-house or partial backup during a power cut needs extra switching and costs more.

Can I add a battery to existing solar?
Usually yes. Whether the existing inverter is reused, replaced or supplemented is the main decision, and it affects the price.
Will a battery keep my house running in a power cut?
Only if backup is specified. Standard installations shut down with the grid for safety.
How long do batteries last?
Manufacturers publish warranty terms in years and in throughput. Compare both rather than the headline number alone.
